It looks pretty sweet, well as sweet as a police car could be. I'd be interested if the local police departments around my area switch to it when it comes out. They have mainly Impalas and Chargers now but they have had them for 2-3 years now although I'm not sure what the life of a police car is. The only thing that sucks is it's another pair of headlights I have to memorize.
Switching to the Taurus also means new light bars, cages and the little storage type do dads that come with police cruisers. That adds up to a bunch of money on top of the purchase price.
As these cars begin to wear out get replaced, the departments may be able to reuse some of the equipment and save a few bucks.
Nice looking car...is it based on the Taurus...wonder what the specs, engine, etc. GM is coming out with a RWD 6 liter (355 hp) V8 police car in 2011, I think. Should be an interesting competition between those two old rivals Ford and Chevy..
0-60 mph under 6 seconds...also a V6 available in the GM.
Law enforcement will miss the Crown Vic.........The newer lightweight police cruisers are at a definite disadvantage in some pursuit situations, the PIT maneuver mostly. I have heard several accounts of attempted PITs on larger SUVs and PUs by Impalas and Chargers with less than desirable outcomes..........The CV excelled at the PIT with its heavier mass.
Did you see it's competition, though? EXCLUSIVE: The Chevy Caprice Police Car Is Back! - Chevrolet Caprice - Jalopnik
Ford should have gotten off their collective asses six years ago and brought the Falcon up here to have a fresh (for this market) rear drive car instead of just complaining it would take three years to get it set up for the US market. Now it's six years down the road, and no closer to a full size RWD car.
It would be very nice to see a new Galaxie or Fairlane police package, in all it's full size v8-powered glory.
I'm surprised that GM is coming out with a RWD police package. I have a few friends on the local city PD that say the Impalas and Chargers handle way better than the CV in the city whereas the CV seems to be better suited for interstate use.
It appears that designers at the major automakers are finally getting the hint that building 'purpose-built' cars specifically for police use is the way to go. CarbonMotors started this a couple of years ago with a purpose-built diesel police car. Looks like Chevy and Ford are following-up. Looks good to me. With all the crap we put on and in the cars nowadays, the stock vehicles turned into repainted and outfitted police cars are looking more like gypsy wagons. The newer vehicles are likely going to need heavy-duty alternators and 2 batteries.
Ryan, I like the AWD feature.
Purpose-built is long past due. They've been doing it with fire trucks for decades. Could you see them retrofitting stock dump trucks with tanks and hoses and lights and calling them fire trucks?
I am sorry.............someone enlighten me....How is a front wheel drive car going to hold up for police use? How long during a pursuit will the front end last driving thru fields, over curbs, thru medians, over parking dividers?.........Things the CV does everyday with the worst happening being an alignment job and new rubber......I just do not see the "abuse" factor being in favor of FWD.
How'd they get lazy??? 365 hp and awd?? whats lazy about that?

Impalas are the most popular police cruiser around here....and they hold up fine....and the new interceptor for the record will be awd...not fwd

Ford got lazy because they didn't bother to refine the CV or build a better RWD interceptor package to appeal to the masses. The Impalas are very popular everywhere and now GM is coming out with a RWD Caprice. This puts Ford playing catch up once again.
The Taurus will no doubt be as reliable as the Impala and the Charger. I suppose as long as Ford can hit that plateau, they have a chance to sell some police cars.

I think with the outdated architecture of the crown vic (early 80's).....its just not a competitive car any longer...... and if they only offered the new interceptor in front wheel drive i'd agree that was lazy.....but the fact that it will be all wheel drive i'd say is worlds better than a rwd interceptor.....up here in snow country there are cv's that get stuck every winter.....right when they're needed the most.....I think ford has with the awd interceptor catipulted themselves right into the lead....(plus pd's should enjoy the 365hp with v6 fuel economy over the 6.0l fuel economy of the impala)
I don't see how they got lazy. Ford has police fleet boards that take direct input from fleets and the CV is still the top selling police car by far. The Taurus beats the CV in every test used on the various police cars, even though the CV was usually last to all the other police sedans in speed and braking it was still preferred by a vast majority of police fleets and the Taurus outperforming it in every test, including trunk space should make it a hit.
As for driving over curbs, I think you watch too many cop movies 90%+ of a cop cars life is idling and simple patrol duty.
