My truck is a farm truck, it has been all its life. Its days of being loaded to the gills with wheat and corn have long since past, and now it's lucky to see 1000 lbs on that big flat bed. Driven round town, no freeway... rarely sees 40 mph.
That being said, its brakes are shot. It came originally with vaccum boosted master cylinder, but that was a factory option.
I am going to rebuild the brake system next, new M/C, wheel cyls and shoes. The vacuum booster is 245 bucks to rebuild, and I was just thinking about replacing it with the M/C that is not vacuum assisted. Any thoughts or advice appreciated, I'm not trying to go cheap, and there have been times that I would have paid 245 for good brakes that work... but like I said, considering my application for this truck, is it worth the dough.
Thanks again, J
I don't think I could answer your question for you. I like good brakes, and it's hard to drive something that doesn't feel "right" after driving modern cars with all their power amenities. I don't know where or who gave you the rebuild quote, but if it wasn't these guys, you might give them a try and see what they can do for you. I've had good luck with them.
I've had quite a few F-5 and F-6 parts trucks and most all of them had the vacuum booster bypassed. I have not idea of how much the vacuum boosts really helps but from these trucks I would guess many people drove them without the booster without a problem. I don't know this for sure because I've never asked a person who drove them what they were like.
Where are you getting the brake parts from? Job Lot had a pretty good deal for the MC, all four wheel cylinders and hoses for around $300. They didn't have shoes, you'd have to have your old ones relined.

The quote I qot for the vacuum booster O/H was from Karps Brake service. I got their # from friend who used them and was satisfied, but I will check with Deweys. I really dont know what it would be like to have good brakes on this truck, as it is fairly new to me and has never had good brakes since I've owned it. Therein lies the dilema, worth it or not. I have nothing to compare it to... I agree on joblot, they are friendly folks with great prices, and I'll use them for everything I can
