I am having an issue with my 2004 Explorer that i hope someone can help with. Every time I start the truck the guages bottom out and make a clicking noise as they seem to bounce off of the peg. This goes on for about ten seconds and then stops. Each time this happens the trip mileage resets to 0. The battery is not in the best of shape but i don't have the money to replace it right now. Could the condition of the battery be to blame? I did a search on this topic and came up empty. Anyone?
Put it this way, All the E-450 trucks I have at u-haul, battery is dead and I crank it, soon as i release the key it does this. And on my 02 explorer, would do this when I reconnected the battery and turned the key on. So I would definitely point to the battery for this, and with colder temps coming, it is going to leave you stranded
Funny but this just happened to me after being gone for a month. Tried to start the '02 but it wouldn't turn over. I guess the "security" system drained the bat in that time frame. Put the battery on a charger but it wouldn't hold a charge. It was a Checker 96 month bat that failed in 60 months.
I'd never seen a 96 mo battery either but as I remember it was a special sale Checker (now O'Reily) had when my OEM battery failed. It's my belief that battery warranties are set to exceed the actual expected battery life so the owner has a bit of warranty left and is "forced" to buy the new one from the same source or lose the little bit of warranty value left on the failed battery. Yes that's a cynical view but it is based on 50 years of experience!!!
