Hi everyone. I have been lurking around here since I bought my 97 F-250 Supercab 4x4 with E4OD since last December and I have gained a wealth of information. However, while I was going to work Saturday morning the trans started acting up. It would shift fine when cold then as I stopped and started and it got warmed up, it would not want to shift from 1st to 2nd unless I got off the accelerator. The truck was also taching pretty high at time of shift but was moving forward as normal. When it does finally shift it would be a slow, drawn out shift. All other gears shift fine. I have the TruCool 4739 Cooler on it and the temps hang around 160 - 170. Fluid smells burnt but still looks light red in color. I also scanned the truck using autoenginuity and didn't pull any codes other than the 603 for the chip. Is this the beginning of the end? If so, what are my options? I've heard of BTS and John Wood. Or is this issue caused by something else.
Truck has 233xxx miles with a TW Chip, 4" Lift, 35" Tires, 3.55 gears, 4" Straight Pipe, and Tymar Intake.
I'm thinking a 4" lift, 35" tires, 3.55 gears, and Tony's chip is awfully hard on the tranny.
I'd say the first step would be to change tunes to see if it acts any different. If it still does the same, try removing the chip completely just so you can rule that out.
Often times a chip can mask some problems, so pay attention for other differences when the chip is removed.
And if the fluid smells burnt, change it no matter what color it looks.
Ok, took the chip out of it and took it for about a 20 - 25 minute ride with a bit of stopping and starting. There is definitly a long shift between 1st and 2nd where I believe its slipping. Temp gauge read 175-180 at the end of the trip. Got out of the truck and you can smell a hot clutch/metal smell. Fluid smells even worse, but couldn't tell color in the dark and of course my flashlight died.
I'm afraid its belly up. Time for a rebuild unless new fluid will help it last longer. My first trans blew up by slipping alot and the second one by overheating. Next time I will get a BTS, Woods or RacerX.
I'm also thinking how I hope you're savings account is in good shape right now. What part of the country do you live in? Maybe one of the master builders is fairly close and you can still make it there under your own power.
RacerX appears to be closed until the 13th. BTS is in Lead Hill, AR, so he would be the closest and quickest if you need it now. BTS also has a few different shops around the country that he will ship a tranny to and let them install it. Maybe you'll get lucky and can find one of those closer to you.
