96 explorer sport 4.0 4x4
At the first startup in the morning, when you put in drive (D).all
it does is rev. It takes a few seconds to go into gear.Reverse
is fine. Its worse in the winter time. Its been this way since i had
the fluid and filter change(its the second change).First at 35000
second at 67000.Last one was in July 02.Yes its been doing this
for 6 months.Worse in the winter. Any idea what it could be. other than that the transmission shifts smooth
the fluid and filter change was done by ford dealer.
back in july 02 thats when the problem started.i I checked
the fluid last month and its still full and red.
"With all the members here nobody knows the answer"
Did you read all the posts or are you waiting for somebody to find you and tell you the answer?
The Explorer transmissions are notoriously weak. When you got your fluid changed did you have all the fluid flushed out or just the pan dropped? If you are not sure then I bet you only had the pan dropped.
I had the same symptoms on my '95
I had the fluid changed at 30,000 (only dropped the pan)
I had the fluid changed at 60,000 (only dropped the pan)
I had the same shift problem you describe (wouldn't shift into D for a few seconds when cold).
The tranny blew it's second gear completely at 84,000. costing me about 2,400 to rebuild
12,000 after the rebuild I had a problem where the trans wouldnt shift into second. the rebuild shop gave me a bunch of bull about needing a new computer.
After that I READ ALL THE POSTS regarding the explorer transmissions.
I took the car to PEP boys and had the fluid flushed again and the trans shifts fine now.
Make sure you have the right type of fluid. I think in 97 they switched to MERCON V (instead of the older type of MERCON)
You might also think about AMSOIL synthetic fluid
Make sure you have the fluid flushed completely. also have the throtle body valves retorqued to proper tightness. have an auxiliary cooler installed inline with the original
We're just glad you got it fixed. the dealers and transmission shops are all rip offs.
Ford did a good job with these vehicles. they are easily serviceable and repairable. it is just that the dealers don't want to fix anything for less than 1,000 and they all do a SH**ty job
The transmission shops all want 3,000 and they only do slightly better
i had the same prblem in my old 95 chevy s-10 blazer(the truck i oew my life to)i had the fluid changed then it started not goin in to gear right away and it was shifting very odd so i brought it back it turns out when they changed the fluid they broke the new filter and dident put it in correctly they fixed it and dident have any problems untill i toatled the truck
