Engine popping
Ok this morning my son started his truck and it cranked longer than I thought it should. When it did start it POPPED in the exhaust. OK, I figured fuel gut in the exhaust and lit up when it fired. Well then he proceeded to tell me it has been doing this all the time, and even occassionally pops(backfires) going down the road. I figure that there is probably an injector going bad, and leaking down during down time. The thing is that doesn't expain the "backfire" going down the road that he claims kills the truck once in a while. He hasn't bothered me with this cuz I've been laid off and have told him I don't can't put anymore money in his truck. The tranny is about to go south also we suspect as it slips when accelerating hard. Any thoughts???

Need more info on the popping? Can you determine if it's intake or exhaust? Any pressure in the blowby? Any oil in the bottom of the fuel filter bowl, oil or fuel in the degas bottle? Any other signs something is not right?
Any particular times the truck likes to "backfire" while going down the road? Hard acceleration? Bumps? Hitting the brake? Any mods to the truck? Does the CEL stay on?
