Just had the DPF replaced in one of my 2008 F350's. The DPF was cracked. Only 16,000 miles on the truck. Thankfully it was covered under warranty as the price for the repair is $2,949.69.
If your tailpipes have black soot on them there is something wrong so do not let the dealer try to convince you otherwise. I am finding out that a lot of service managers do not know very much about the 6.4's.

Had the same problem. They told me it was normal (Black smoke) and that I didn't drive enough on the highway.
I just had my DPF replaced last week.. started getting smoke while towing.. the dealer tested and tested and couldn't find anything.. called the service hotline and they told them to replace it..
What was the labor break down of that $3K? I've heard they are expensive little bas tards (love how bast ards is censored but pissed isn't) but that is crazy. There won't be many of them replaced out of warranty if they are going to run that much $$.
Scott, They actually tested for that problem. I read the whole report. I am going to hate it when you decide to go 2011. Your input is sooo respected by all us 6.4 owners.

Don't think I will anytime soon. As I will wait till 2012 I think.
Good, we need you happy posters for our knowledge. Your input is greatly respected and I know I spreak for the entire 6.4 population. Thanks for all that you do.
iqoair, Something is wrong. DO NOT let these Ahole service managers tell you otherwise!
They actually did end up replacing mine under warranty after I kindly asked them to call the ford tech line. Ford told them that black soot on the tailpipe of a 6.4 is a result of an internally cracked dpf and gave them the go ahead. It's been fine since. Sorry, I should have clarified that in my original post.
It is amazing to me that these people who are supposed to be "service experts" do not know what they are doing. Glad you got it replaced without a hitch and that it is working well now.
