HI THERE. I own a 1999 superduty 4x4 with a v10. Does anyone have problems with it being sluggish. when you floor it is dead to around 3500rpm than picks up fast. There seems to be always a dead spot in it. the engine only has 15,000 kms on it. It was good when i first bought it. I bring it to ford and they say nothing is wrong with it. Sometimes it will run good but most of the time its dead. And my gas mileage is around 8 mpg on hwy. Ford also says that is normal. I put in a dynomax muffler with dual tailpipes as well as I bought a power programmer 111 by hypertech. it made a little difference. I was wondering if any one else had this problem and maybe fixed it somehow.
Is the problem before or after the duall exhaust modification?
This V10 motor loves the cat back modifications but can become very sluggish in the low end with too open of an exhaust system.
To get the bottom end torque back to the 1900 to 2200 part of the RPM band some back preasure and an H or X pipe must exist before the cat, especially if you installed 3" or larger all the way to the rear.
Glad to be apart of this forum, I am general manager of a large towing company in Louisvile,KY. I have 4 v10 in my fleet, 2 03 550's, with well over 300K on them. One 05 which is blowed up with 260k(oil pump) and an 08 with 35k on the clock. My 03's are runners and will absolutely pull my 08 in half. I just got it back from the dealer where they said nothing is wrong. I am getting very disgusted with it. Fuel mileage ranges around 7 to 8 on the 08 while my 03's get apprx.10mpg? ANy ideas, they are all automatic XLT 550's. On another note, I am having a hard time finding a Y vin code engine for my 05, or even a rebuid kit, any help would be greatly appreciated.
You might want to look into getting an SCT or Diablo hand held tuner. I have one for my mustang and it made a world of difference in the shifting at wide open throttle, and it also helped with gas milage. I plan on getting a tuner for the truck as well. The cost around 370 but worth every penny in my opinion.
The V10 is a good motor but it does like gas. I'm not sure what the milage is, I know my modified Mustang gets better milage. I would love to build a V10 and add a pair of turbos and drop it all in a Stang. So, yea it's a good engine. If 8 is good them more is better.
I'm not sure where you're at, and altitude may be a factor, but that seems a bit low for the fuel mileage. I have a 2001 f350 crew cab long box with 4.30 gears, and I get 10-11 MPG. It goes down to about 9 in the winter, in four wheel drive. I have talked to a few people with the 4.30 gears, and they all say they get the same, 10-11 MPG. I know it is only 2 MPG, but that is 20%, which is huge. There has to be something wrong. I would try to find a shop that has a good mechanic. We have a few guys around here that are very good, but they don't work at Ford dealers. Ask around in your area, and find someone with wexperience with a truck similar to yours.
andsoscot you should check your throttle body, mass air, and your throttle position sensor. Your TB or your Mass Air Sensor could need to be cleaned. It sounds like it's either starving for air or is running too little timing. As for finding an engine I would call Summit and see if they can find one. Don't count on the dealership to be able to fix it all, sometime you need to find a speed shop. They generally run into some of the more uncommon problems. V10 or V8 doesn't matter the set ups of the mod motors is the same. Good luck
im having the same problems with my 99 except i think im still getting around 12 to 13 mpg, changed the air and fuel filter already and no luck. even change the fuel pump not by choice it went out and truck still feels slugish. going to get the sparkplugs changed as soon as i get a chance maybe that will help at least i hope. but i did put a cherrybomb extreme muffler on it with no tips anyone think that could be the problem i hope not cause it sounds really good.
The mufflers should not have made that big a difference. The stock exhaust flows pretty good. I don't know why people think there is supposed to be back pressure. The idea is to cause a scaviging effect. Back pressure would be counter productive. Be careful when changing the plugs, if they are the same ones that are used for the Mustang, they have a tendency to brake.
Thanks for everybodies reply to my thread. The 08 is getting a little better on fuel but it still seems short on power. It as almost at the 60K mark on the clock. I had a crate motor installed in my 05 at All State Ford here in Louisville. I couldn't have asked for a better dealer experience and it was all at a reasonable price with a warranty. However, it has developed a slight problem within the past week. It acts like it is starving for gas when the fuel tank gets below a half tank. Any ideas? My 03's are running hard everyday. The one has reached 385000 and its twin just hit 325000. No problems, just keep oil in it
