i have a 02 sd 250. my 4x4 unit works great and even when i take it out of 4x4 my truck makes a clunk when turning sharp and sounds like the front end is still lock and turning the axles. i climbed under the truck and tried to turn the drive shaft and it will not turn free. i have never thought to check it before because everything works fine. my truck has the electronic switch. i bought the truck used a few years ago and i can not read what it says on the hubs them self's.. so i dont know if they are the hubs that have to be on the free or auto ?? if they are the auto hubs how should they work ? should i be able to turn the drive shaft free ? it will not at this point. if i pull the c clip off the hubs can i just pull them off or is there a trick so i can check the inside of them to see if everything is ok or maybe froze up..
With ESOF, the dial should be turned full counterclockwise for "auto" and full clockwise for manual "lock". You can remove the locking hub, like you mentioned, by squeezing the ends of the large wire ring and pulling out the assembly. Some penetrating oil, sprayed around where the wire ring goes. will help loosen it and the o-ring to free up the hub. The hub internals may need greasing, as the dry parts may cause binding and not release the axle shaft gear inside. This should help to explain the process. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Autolock Hub Lubrication Maintenance Web Page Thanks, Bob! I do this maintenance at least every 50k miles, as there is a needle bearing in there that is turning all the time when the hub is disengaged. All locking hubs need routine lubrication for them to last and and work properly.
