New Muffler?

Well, since I was cornered into buying a truck I was fortunate enough to find a pretty good deal on one that I''ve always wanted, a 2001 F250 Supercab 7.3l PSD. I just had it inspected, and among the stuff I need to fix is a new muffler. Looking around it seems like there are aftermarket parts that claim to improve performance. Any recommendations for this, or should I just find an inexpensive OEM part and be done with it?

What are your plans for modding the truck? If you just want a free flowing 3.5 inch check out the walker muffler in my signature. You can also get it at napa for about $75. I had a shop install it for about 80 bucks. It will sound louder than your stock one.

This place also has the Walker Big Truck muffler at a good price. Don't know about the shipping charge though.

Well, as far as modding the truck I'd like to eventually add some stuff to improve power and economy (like an exhaust system like the ones in miller_feed's reply and a cold air intake, probably not a tuner though) and maybe some nicer tires. And a good stereo (of course) so maybe even a high-output alternator depending on how much juice the stereo would draw. Other than that I'll most likely leave it stock...I'm not planning to drag race it, and since I live in the city and it's a 2wd lifting the thing and putting huge tires on it wouldn't get me anything but poorer.

However, those modifications are probably several years into the future, as I just spent a chunk on the truck and since I needed new tires and new lower ball joints (plus a few less costly issues) my bank account has been running backward at a terrifying rate for the past several weeks. What I need is a cheap muffler that I can install now but won't negatively impact performance. If I can get one that improves performance a little that would be great and if it makes the truck louder then so be it (but my preference is not to be one of those guys that drives a ridiculously loud truck).

Just slap a straight pipe in there that will be your cheapest way out and it's not that loud at all.

Will a straight pipe give me any trouble with inspection? If it's suitable than that's what I'll do.

I see you are in MD. I am sure someone familiar with your inspection requirements will chime in.

Well, checked with the place that did the inspection, and straight pipe is a no-go...MD parameters require some kind of muffler w/ inthernal baffles. So, the cheapest I've found is by a company called Thrush. From what I can gather they're not exactly performance products, but at ~45 bucks for a muffler, I don't really care. I just want to get something cheap and slap it in and get the rest of the work done so i can get my truck registered. The bitchin' high-flow exhaust kit will be two or three years down the line, probably.

Anyone have any reason not to go with the Thrush?
