I am so proud of my truck. I drove 275 miles on 15 gallons of 87 octane. I replaced the cap, rotor, I have 8.5 MSD's and auto lite copper core plugs, I got 31x10.50's filled to 55psi and they are far from highway tires. Thats about 18 MPG out of a 18yr old 351 with 180 on the ODO (It rolled over about 140 miles into the trip) I can't say enough about having a good ignition system and proper air in the tires can do for MPG. I'm making the trip next weekend and I want to see If I can break 20mpg for the ride. It's all highway at about 65mph.
That sure kicks the crap out of my 88. Man I wish I had od
My 87'302 gets over 20mpg at 65 mph. W/a high output coil, that allows me to increase plug gap by 25% & by increasing my base time 6 more degrees BTDC. (Motorcraft Nic plated Copper cores/ MSD 8.5 wires & brass cap, rotor). I wish I had MAF & sequential injection!
That matches my 300 6cyl with a 5 speed. That is the best I ever got. They say though that there is only 2 things a man will lie about. 1) Is the MPG's of his truck. 2) Is his peenis size.

It isn't rocket science. Ignition system upgrade, allowing a 25% plug gap increase & bump the base timing. Assuming your cylinder compression is worth the trouble. I average 180psi/cylinder, so I get more benefit than say someone w/ 135 or 150psi. Only 80K on the engine helps. So does running synthetic fluids. And de-carboning the compression chambers one a year, injection cleaner every 5 tanks & replace o2 sensor every 40k miles. Hydrocarbon output tests at .o1 ppm., so I know I'm getting full use of the gas. In fact, a hair lean w/ 87 octane. 89 octane leaves me .10ppm.
And to think I was going to say I was super happy to 9.87 MPG with my 91 351 and E4OD. Then the snow will fall, I'll slap the plow on the front and see 5 to 6.5 MPG
And yes my motor and Trans has problems. I think I have a blown head gasket or cracked head. Burns almost as much water as it does gas! LOL and my trans slips bad in 2nd, once it shifts in to 2nd you can feel the truck slow down. One more winter.... maybe!
Payed $500 for it almost 3 years ago and been pushing snow with it every winter.
i wish i had a od...
302 t18 3.55's and 31's.... 10mpg, best i ever saw was 12mpg i was pupmped up when i got the 12..

Start by running error codes, Seafoam the combustion chambers, desludge the engine, flush the coolant system, then ignition system upgrade & timing bump. Replace the 02 sensor at least if 60K miles or more. They become less accurate & switching speed slows. This is even more crucial with the later MAF/ sequentially fired injection engines. You aught to be able to squeeze 15 mpg @ 65 mph out of her at least! FullSizeBronco.com - 78 - 96 Ford Bronco offroad club, forums, tech, installs
only igniton stuff i haven't upgraded was the cap rotor and coil.. i need a coil but more importantly i need the money for the coil!
i need to seafom it agin.. i did it about 5 or 6,000 miles ago and when i did that i added it in the crankcase, didn't get the full effect, i also need to get so fuel injector cleaner too, haven't ran that through it with injector cleaner since i bought it

You just listed all of the tings I'm doing to my mountaineer (in that order). my last step is changing the ignition system components (no timing bump though). If all goes well, I'll have that done sun/mon. Out of curiosity, why do you recommend flushing the coolant system for MPG? I did mine today because it was gross.
