First the information on my truck:
1990 F150 4x4 auto with a 302. I had a 1995 5.0 mustang gt engine that I was going to install but looking at it nothing really works easily into the truck. The mustang motor had too much to change, intake, timing cover, mass air, fuel rails, injectors, and so one. Looking for an easy swap for more power. So now I have a 351 from a 1990 F150 4x4 auto. My question is this, I have the wiring harness and computer from the 351. Will this be a direct swap, sort of plug and play. Pull one out, put one in type of thing. Thanks
your flex plates are different weights... You need to put the 351w flexplate in with the 351w... make sure you DO NOT USE the 5.0 Flex plate with the 351w! otherwise you should be a pull and drop swap!
I do not mean to hijack this thread. But since we are on the subject of engine swapping. Is it possible to replace a 351 with a 4.9L in an F250 extended cab 4X2? Also is it practical? I only intend to do light hauling and prefer the inline motor to the V8. Any help would be appreciated.
yes you can... if you want to change your wiring harness out, get a new/used computer for the 4.9L... You also need to change fuel rails and engine mounting hardware... I have considered doing the 4.9-5.8 swap but ultimatly decide to just keep 2 trucks... less work...
No they don't.. the AOD was never installed behind a 351 in a truck or any truck bigger than an F150. DO NOT use the flexlate from the 5.0 as it is the wrong balance and DEFINITELY DO NOT use the one currently attached to the 5.8 as it has the wrong offset and will destroy the AOD in seconds, you will have to buy a 28oz AOD flexplate.
Otherwise the 5.8 is a direct bolt-in, use the existing wiring in the truck now and plug in a 5.8 EEC from a manual or C6 auto truck, the one from the F250 will not work if it is for the 5.8/E4OD combo... which is what it should be.
FWIW the 5.0HO swap isn't as complicated as you think either, simply install the truck intake, oilpan and pickup on the HO longblock and bolt it in, no wiring or computer changes necessary.
Buy looking at the 5.0 HO the fuel hookup is different, the firing order is different, the distributer is different, timing cover, oil pan, and all accessories. So if I swap intakes, front cover and accessories, and the oil pan with the original 5.0 in the truck, everything else will work? How wil this work with the original EEC if cam and firing order are different? I do have the wiring harness and MAF and EEC from the 95 Mustang Gt, but I dont think it will work with the truck. Thanks
