storage compartment \ bedside tool box removal

The truck I recently bought has a bedside tool box but the truck didn't come with keys for it. For that matter the truck didn't come with any keys.

At this point the truck can't be moved to take it to a locksmith to be picked and rekeyed so I was just going to take the box.

I am attempting to remove it. I have removed all the screws on the face. I have ground off the two bolts that go through the bed floor and into the bracket on the rear (rear of truck) of the box. It won't budge. I think I can feel a bolt on the inner front of the tool box but i'm not sure.

I thought about just drilling out the lock but the only replacement lock (complete with handle) I could find was a NOS one for $100.00 and the locksmith was only $22.00.

Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to get a locksmith to come to the truck.

Don't know the cost.

duphofff,

You may want to try this:

Go to home depot in the hardware dept. They have drawer locks like this:

Search Results for drawer lock

If the locks on your box are like these, then drill out the locks and replace them (for about $10.00)

I did this with a Delta box I bought second hand - the owner had lost the keys...

Good luck!

Is it possible that someone could open up the lock on their box and take a picture of what's behind the lock. If it is something that is easily available I'll just drill it out and get a replacement.

Are you talking about the factory tool box on the passenger side of the bed mounted down low located just aft of the cab? If so,if you can wait until the morning,I'll take a picture of mine for you.

Yes.

You would be my weekend hero if you could hold the handle up and take a couple pictures! If you could look inside and see if there are a couple of bolts that go up through the top into the bed rails that would be great. I have everything I can see free and it will not budge. I hate to ruin the lock if it is just being stubborn.

Not a problem.I just noticed your truck is a 66,mine is a 64.I don't know how much difference that will make but I'll take the pics anyway and see what I can find inside.I'll email you the pics in the morning.

As far as I know the tool box from 1964 to 1966 was the same. There were two available one was for the short bed (C4TZ9946100A) and one for the long bed (C4TZ9946100B).

I bet someone can verify this.

I have one of these boxes I bought on a bed I bought for the tailgate. Mine is for a short box so if yours is long box, there might be some differences. I removed it from the original box, and I am planning to install in on my truck. There are the bolts on the front around the door, and the one bracket bolt that goes through the bed. Then it just slides out. If yours is still held there is either another bolt on it, or it is just stuck because of years of being on there.

Buy a new ignition for $10 and take it to be keyed, you could even get the doors keyed our get new locks for $6 each . I would worry about the ignition before a tool box.

Justa FYI I will be deleting my side tool box in my bed in the next couple weeks if anyone wants it I will sell it. Its in really good shape and from what I can see in side and out, its rust free.

The whole tamale (Styleside bed, storage compartment, latch and mounting brackets) is illustrated here: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Sheet Metal Illustration Section / Page 27

Old Harley has this catalog, can scan and post pics.

The key & cylinder for the storage compartment is not the same as the door/ignition cylinders/keys. Ford did not sell the storage compartment cylinder w/keys separately, only available with the latch assembly.

Originally both the door and ignition cylinders were keyed alike. But, since the keys are missing, who knows if that's still the case today...or not? These parts could be bought separately, or as a door/ignition lock set.

C3AZ6222050B .. Door & Ignition Lock Set (Cylinders w/keys-keyed alike) / Obsolete/Reproduced

Fits: 1961/66 F100/1100 / 1963/69 N/NT500/1000 / 1966/67 Bronco / 1967/69 F800/1000 // 1961/64 'full sized' Ford Custom/Galaxie/Starliner/500XL.

On the subject of the lock, I have mine pulled out and it looks pretty standard. Like a standard cabinet lock. I plan to take mine to a locksmith and see if he can replace or rekey the lock.
