Vacuum Advance Problem 400M

Need some suggestions. 82 F250 4wd M/T, stock. Engine starts and runs normal with vacuum hose from dizzy unhooked and plugged, and dizzy pluged. When i connect vacuum hose to dist, idles fine, but just off idle engine has a big hesitation, and wants to backfire and die. Have replaced all vacuum hoses and made sure routing is as shown on decal to the best of my ability.
There are a couple of check valves that say dist & vac, what are the correct position?? (ie color terminology on decal)
Any thoughts would help, need to smog in CA, can answer other questions if needed, Thanks

I take it your vacuum advance has two ports? If so, it sounds like you have the vacuum line going to the carb plugged into the wrong port on the vacuum advance can.

Horizontal port on the front of the can should be connected to the vacuum line that goes to the base of the carb.

The port on top is for smog stuff, my motor had all that stuff taken out though. Make sure if you don't use it to plug it up.

Thanks for the replies. I found problem to be this-
I had replace ignition module prior to this and not knowing crossed the orange and purple wires that come from dizzy to module. From what I understand this will advance??? the timing around 22 degrees. Well after the wires were connected correctly I got it running again and re-timed engine to 6 degrees as per decal and now runs well and vacuum advance seems to be operating as should. BTW the vacuum advance only has one port. Thanks again, hope it will smog!

Good to hear.

BTW running a little Seafoam through the carb is supposed to help with smog.
