i just did that sunday, there is three screws on each of the inside of the gas tank square, you have to undo them, then im not sure what year your truck is, but mine is an 87, and there were 6 bolts and then the tailight, and you should be good to go. hope this helps
Like aking225 said, the screws on each filler neck which are accessible from the fuel door, and then there might also be one more screw between the outer and inner bedsides which holds the filler neck somewhat parallel to the ground (at least my '95 did).
Remove the tailgate
There should be two or three separate connections all grouped together at the rear driver corner of the truck where the tail light harness mates to the main wiring harness running along the frame rail.
Now the 6 separate bolts are all that hold the bed on. I had some minor difficulty removing the bolts from a combination of rust and bad angles to work at. While none of the bolts should be too hard to get to, the rust from the years of sitting will make it more difficult that you'd like to get them to separate. If at all possible, tack weld the bolts to the bed since there's a good chance the bolts will spin rather than holding long enough to break the nuts loose.
like they both said, though my filler necks were also attached to the underside of the bed by a hose clamp. and rather than tac weld to the bed i welded a long piece of steel rod to the bolts that had spun out. it worked as a stopper.
Just removed mine the other day. You'll have to drop the rear tank (have fun with that) then the 6 carriage bolts. I just took the grinder to those after only getting one nut out of six off with air impact... About a half hour of grinding was all it took, than a large punch to knock the bolts through the frame... I left tailgate on, no difference, plus I think it helps keep the bed from twisting when you lift it off (did this by myself, so I had to get creative with getting bed off). Have fun and make sure your kids aren't nearby to hear all the cussing
I weld lug nuts on to those bolt heads as I have dammaged the bed(twisted the welds out) the last time I torqued the nuts getting them loose. I never had to drop any tanks to get a bed off. Two of us can pick up and move the bed off the truck(without tail gate).
When you put the bed back on the frame, make sure the round plastic pads are in place or you will have some creeking and grunting noises when the frame flexes against the bed! Also put never-seaze on the bolts and nuts, that will help out if you have to pull the bed again.
