yeah i am new to the site i just got a 1955 ford f100 and i am having problems with the generator how hard and expensive is it to swap to a 12 volt system or if there is anywhere to locate a generator that would be good to
Welcome to the site. This is a great place to learn everything you need to know about your truck. Lots of good people eager to help. Firstly, are you going to keep the original engine. If yes, post your parts needs as a new thread and you'll get results. If you're swaping engines for a later one, the only changes will be your voltage regulator, starter seleniod, all bulbs including headlights, and you'll need a voltage reducer if you want to use the old gauges. I'm sure someone else in this forum will fill in the gaps I missed. Good luck.
Converting to 12 volt is (in my opinion) a prudent move.
There are a couple of avenues you can take such as buying a premade generic harness or running your own wires. I prefer (and have rewired) one wire at a time - I'm not crazy about premade harnesses - they are difficult to handle sometimes and youwill still find yourself wire tracing. One wire at a time is simply connecting the dots.
There are components you can keep and some you have to change. I have a list.
None of it is at all difficult if you take your time and have a good drawing to wire to. You will not find a shortage of help here with wiring.
As far as expense you should be able to complete the entire conversion - with a one wire 12 volt ALTERNATOR for $500 or less.
I have all the drawings you might need and an A to Z rewiring guide I an e-mail you when you get serious enough to get started. It's too big to post and in the wrong format. Send me an e-mail to babbiebuddie@***.net if you are interested and I'll send them to you.
