For the 3rd time now I have had to replace the solenoid, starter and cables. I have already replaced the ignition switch (key switch) as well as the slide switch located on the top of the steering column. The starter keeps shorting out, internally, or not disengaging once the motor fires.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? Solenoid or starter? Could leaving the key on cause the solenoid to overheat? This last time.....yesterday, it fried the cable going to the solenoid (frame mounted) as well as the neg cable coming off the battery. It was like the solenoid was stuck closed while the starter was permanently shorted to ground.
sounds to me like you have a bad ground. i would put a cable between the engine and the frame and see if that help or put the negative cable from the battery right to the engine block. also check that the solenoid is grounded properly.
does the starter turn the motor over easily or does it struggle? do you have a manual or auto transmission and do you have the correct starter for the transmission? could be that the starter needs to be shimmed to align correctly with the flywheel.
It's in an F700 with Allison auto trans. All cables are new, including the ground strap from the block to the frame, I even cleaned the locations down to bare metal where they attach. Will double check the ground at the solenoid, starters have all been new with no problems in turning the motor except sometimes it seems to stick and try to keep cranking after the motor has started. Thanks for the tips!
I had a problem buying junky autozone solenoids. They would either make the starter run non stop or not make the starter work at all. I bought a motorcraft one from Ford and havent had another problem.
