Question '63 F100 engine swap recommendations

Howdy,

I am doing a 100% do-over on a '63 F100 (short-narrow box) back into a 2X4 shop truck. It is now equipped with a 312; 3-speed; transfer case ****** front axle; etc.

I have two engines sitting here that I'm pondering putting into it. They are a '67 289 and a '72 351C. And I have rear sump pans for both engines available. Which would be your choice?

BTW...The transmission is a BW T10H & rerar axle is the original 9".

Much obliged,
Mustang Gregg

I would keep the Y block... but, thats just me. second choice is the 289, you do what you think is best.

Nope, I can't do that.

Bill:

Thanks for the quick reply!

The Y block has been wide open to the weather for 10+ years and was blown up before getting parked. So I don't want to go through it. It would be neat as a period-correct engine.

My first choice would be a 460 PI, but the Mustang II -type front suspension would probably be over-stressed.

Much obliged,
MG

I have a 64 f100 292 t-18 4spd question. Does the 289/302 use same bellhousing as the Y-block? Thought was 6 bolt?

The 272, 292 & 312 Y blocks use the older bellhousing bolt pattern.
The '66 & newer 289, 302, 351W & 351C do use a 6 bolt pattern, but won't work with the one that's in the truck now.
I already have a newer bellhousing & rebuilt BW transmission.

Thanks,
MG

351 will give you more torque if you put anything in the bed.

Theres a few pics in my profile, I just got it a few weeks ago and im not working right now so I got nothing major going on, that and im limited on what I can do in a condo. Early next year were moving into a house and im going to buy a welder and a bender, then it should come up pretty quick. I have a great idea to 3 link the rear with coil overs and im going to shorten the box so it still has the tailgate, lights and stays street legal but I can back up to a wall and the tires will touch first. Then I have to make some removeable mud flap system.

Y block lower end

Flipklos:

When I get the engine pulled out, I'll check the lower end out. And I really have no use for them. So I'll let you know if they're good.
A neighbor already wants the ****** axle & D/S.

The small block uses a different bell and your 64 T-98 transmission will not bolt to any 65 up bell housing.
