The fracture is right where the steering box attaches to the frame just on the bottom, not running up the side, so its not that hard of a fix.
We found it while we were adjusting the steering box, and i was checking the play in the steering, my dad saw the steering box move left and right-several inches- instead of the tires. So after a few seconds of looking underneath, thats what i found.
ok, those pictures didnt blow up like ones before did. ill see if i can get better ones up

Reason: bad photos
yeah, that will be taken care of tommorrow, maybe the day after, but its not bad, ive got a 1/8" clip I can cut so span over it 4 inches on both sides with bolt holes i can puddle weld to the frame, shouldnt be a long fix
Hmmm... I guess engineering across the Big 3 is pretty much the same cuz I've read bowties have had the problem and even the newer Rams crack their frames. In fact for the Rams, there's a company that manufactures a brace that bolts to the steering box and transfers some of the load to the right frame rail.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on my rig.
no offense taken. I knew your makin sure i was doin it right. i think it was poor "prior ownership". Ill see if i can find that TSB. Thanks for the heads up on that Bullit
I tried looking, couldn't find it and gave up. I know Number Dummy has mentioned it a couple times in threads.
Going off memory, I believe the crack was welded and then a "plate" was bolted to the frame rail. Although I would weld the plate and not bolt it.
But to refresh, it was a very common problem for 2WD and 4WD trucks to crack the frame.
As a matter of fact, and I hate to admit it, but the frame on my truck has a small crack. Never knew about it until recently when I swapped in the manual tranny and noticed it when installing the z-bar brackets.
ive got a welder here, and some metal building plates and i-beam bolts that will go in place- ill post some pics when its done. Ill see if i can find it
Holy moly! Is this all of the dents or just a specific wieght of truck? ie: F-150's, F-250's ect? I know they have different steering setups for the 8 lug trucks
well, you can check yours for signs of stress to see if you have a problem, its not a hard find. Im not sure on the years though, although im sure bullitt can tell you
