I am having trouble with the 600 Holley on my 79 Bronco poppin back through the carb, has done it since I put it on new 2 years ago. Get on it from a dead still it pops back through carb, hit the gas fast while goin down road and it does it. Also does it when its in neutral and I rev it up, never see any black smoke. So I figure this is a lean condition?
Accelerator pump squirts good but I guess its not enough. Should I try a different cam on it or change squirters?
I tried this carb on one of my other trucks that don't have any carb problems and this problem carried on to the next engine also.
Took a look through the little booklet that came with carb. Stock nozzle is a .031 guess im gonna step it up to a .035 and see what happens unless I get any suggestions. I hope the .035 will cure it, geez its 13 dollars.
I had a problem with mine a while back. I ended up using a vacuum gauge on it and fixed it. I cant wait to get a diffrent carb, its a holley 2 barrel 4412-2 sucks gas like there no tomorrow. Im pretty soon the po used the carb for dirt track racing. And has been jetted
Yeah I adjusted the mixture screws with a vac gauge. Carb is two years old with less than 2,500 miles on it. I don't hardly drive my Bronco so I just left it alone but I have decided I am finally gonna get it tuned right since I got a little more time now.
Once you get passed the poppin part and get goin this carb will flat out run. Carb idles good. The Edelbrocks on my other trucks run great and give no problems but the Holley sure does have more kick in the @ss in my opinion.
Pump cams are cheap. I would try one with a steeper profile on it. First make sure your vac. advance is hooked up to a ported outlet and working. It should be dead at idle and pull vac. as soon as you step on it. The vac. advance helps prevent a stumble when you hit the gas.
You could try using the other hole for the pump cam screw and see what that does, also make sure you have .010 to .015 clearences between the pump cam and the arm at full throttle, between that and it squirting at the first movement of the throttle, you will know you are using all the pump has to give. other than that do like suggested above, get a cam selection and go from there..
I checked vac advance, its working properly. Also checked the clearance and its correct.
So yall reckon I should try a steeper cam before layin out the bucks for a bigger nozzle? It has an orange one now which seems fairly steep to me. I guess I will try a black one and a green one and see what they do.
It leans out pretty bad for a second. I even put this carb on my 302 today and it goes lean for a second on it to.
If you have some more jets to play with , Start'' JETTING UP '' in size !
I think " jetting up " will be your '' Cure '' ! Its worth a try .
P,S. even with how the plugs look give it a try

Going up in jet sizes isn't going to help the off idle lean condition though is it?
I don't have any extra parts around for tuning and I hate to throw out 120 bucks for the full tuning assortment kit when I only have one vehicle that has a Holley on it.
A buddy of mine has a Holley tuning kit(well part of one, he has used almost everything) I'll see what he can dig up before I go off buying stuff.
Well I went down to the barn today and dug out two Holleys my dad use to run. Both of them have smaller nozzles than I am already running so thats not going to help me none. One of them was upgraded to the 50cc accelerator pump, woot! lol.
One of them had main jets size 66 and the other had main jets size 72. I already have the 66 in a tub of cleaner gettin cleaned up I guess Ill swap them in.

Well steping up to the 66 size jets did the trick. I made many runs in 4 wheel drive back in the field testing it out and then took a drive on the road. Did fine. When it is in park and reving it up sometimes not everytime, only did it 3 times I can hear a very faint pop out of the carb. Before it was more like Boom! Ill play around with some pump cams and different squirters to cure the rest.
Checked it before and it is set to stock specs. I was going to turn it up a little bit but the distributer is frozen in the block. I have been spraying it off and on with PB Blaster for almost two years, hasn't budged yet.
