I own an '84 F350. The seals for the Pitman shaft on the steering gear box have blown out. My question is, can these seals be replaced without overhauling the entire gear box? Can it be done leaving the box together, still on the truck, just taking the pitman arm off? Thanks for any input!
Should not be a problem. Drop the pitman arm, remove the snap ring, pry the old seal and washers out, fit new ones and reassemble.
Problem comes if the gear box pitman shaft is rusted or badly worn. However an easy job and a seal kit should only be a few $, so well worth a try.
Any idea as to how I can get the seal bottomed into the bore without destroying it? I'm afraid the shaft or the bore could be a problem as the truck has 8" suspension lift without a drop pitman arm and the tie-rods sit at a hard angle. It has a wishbone front end. Does this sound problematic? The seal kit was very cheap so worth a try. Thank you for the advice.
The lift you have should not be a problem to the new seal, however it may (or may not) cause faster wear of the pitman shaft/bushing. With the seal out there should be no side play in the shaft, if there is then the new seal may not last.
When replacing the seal lube it well with ATF and push it in as far as you can with your fingers, then fit the steel washer and push the seal and washer home with a couple of screw drivers.
