My truck died this morning! I started it and it started to idle rough, I thought no big deal and drove to work, left it running for about 5 minutes and the CEL is flashing, strong smell of sulfur/rotten egg coming from the exhaust and the rough idle. I drove it around the block and truck has absolutely no power and I stopped at stop sign it died and would not restart. Does anybody have an idea on what the problem could be?
A flashing CEL indicates a misfire condition. You need to pull the codes to see what cylinders/banks were involved. Plus there may be other codes that will give you more info on why it will not start.
A constant CEL could mean anything; a flashing CEL means you've got a bad misfire that is potentially causing cat damage. When that bad boy starts blinking shut it down.
I agree with others, it's either bad cat(s) (caused by an upstream malfunction) or the old banana in the tailpipe trick.
I had a buddy of mine check the code and it was #2 misfire, the CEL is not flashing now. My dealership is about 60 miles away, would it be ok to drive that far?
It won't start blinking until you get on the gas pedal...then it will probably hesitate, stutter, buck and might make some popping noises and backfire...that's when it will start to blink.
If the injector is stuck, bad COP or the plug is bad you'll be sending raw fuel straight to the cat for 60 miles. Once there the dealer will listen to your complaints, take a look at the cat and see if fuel comes pouring out of it (and it will...60 miles worth). At that point they'll say your number 2 cylinder injector, COP or plug is bad. Probably $100, $150 bucks or completely covered under warranty. But the cat, that'll be $700 and it ain't covered.
If they go by the book. They might be a cool dealership and get ford to cover the cat by not mentioning the fact that it was drowning in un-burnt fuel and cover it as a failed cat.
Bridge, you are absolutely correct, I will be putting my truck on a trailer and towing her! Thanks all soooo much for responding! Again I will let everybody know what the dealer finds!

Just heard from the dealer, #2 coil was shot and they told me tha #1,4 7 were the same way! I should have the truck back sometime next week!! Thanks again guys!!!
I have had the same problem the last week. But mine hasnt died just ran rough. They are thinking its a fuel injector problem. The only code I had was P0307 which was missfire in cylinder 7. The replaced that coil and nothing and the plugs were changed 2 weeks ago.
