if you get (more like find) a ats kit, banks or hypermax then your getting around 10psi and they say 50% more power (i dont see that happening) but i say its worth it.
I was looking at the ats kit it didnt tell me the psi rating in the literature I was reading but I figuared 6 just because thats the rating of the last charger I was looking at if a guy could get 50% more power for that it would be good I am slightly worried about not having oil coolers on the pistons tho... but I guess we aren't talking about the 25psi a psd turbo is putting out ether
you cant buy a ats kit from them, or most any other site. you can still find banks kits but they do not support idi's anymore either. hypermax is the only company still making turbo kits for us. and you do have oil squirters for your pistons.
huh so I do have oil squirters whatda know I was told by a very knowledgeable mechanic it doesn't but I guess even the best can make mistakes.. So I am holding an recent ATS catalog looking at my turbo kit... sence when are they not selling them anymore
yes you do, i read a few times in here that there were and it was confirmed when i tore my old 7.3l apart. i unbolted ever single one before i took the block to scrap. its been about a year since they quit selling them. they give everyone a different answer on if/when they are gonna carry them again.
I see plenty of new old stock ATS and Banks turbo systems on E bay.
If you have the exhaust right, decent injectors and IP, and the timing set right, a turbo is like a night and day difference.
The IDI turbo Ford installed had a huge muffler and a smashed down pipe that did put a hurt on the power it made.
But you also have to remember, IDI turbo released in 1993 rated at 190 HP.
1994 IDI turbo, again 190 HP.
Mid year 1994 for a good many more dollars the 7.3 Power Stroke was introduced with 215 HP.
Looking from a marketing point of view, 1994 IDI turbo with 190 HP for say 10,000 dollars.
Or you could have the new and more powerful 7.3 Power Stroke with 215 HP for say 13,000 dollars.
Ok thats 25 HP and 75 foot pounds of torque more for 3,000 dollars.
Now lets say the IDI turbo was rated at 235 HP and about the same torque as the Stroke motor.
You still going to spend that extra 3,000 dollars for a new unproven computer controlled engine?
Most likely you are going to stay with the tried and true IDI turbo motor and leave that 3,000 dollars in your pocket.
Decent free flowing exhaust, a little work on the intake system to the turbo air cleaner, and I am going to say getting 235 HP is easy.
That is what the 7.3 Power Stoke was rated at in 1997.
so how do you think they, banks, ats etc come up with 50% gains? that would mean for my truck that 277 horses should be doable, safely saying 250 is easy to get. They used a muffled 3in from what i can tell and stock-ish intake? with a good CAI and straight 4in, shouldnt you get more?
If the fuel system, the intake and exhaust system and the rest of the engine is in good shape, yes I think 250 to 277 HP is very possible.
Add an intercooler, some hot injectors like Mell's Misters and a hot IP with the right timing, and a few flow mods to the heads, I think over 300 HP is also not out of the question.
And if done right, still have a reliable engine.

But..... (there's always a negative guy ain't there?) how bad do you think the mileage would be on that setup?
and what do you think it would cost for all those mods cus I can go out and buy a nice 1999+ psd for under 10k where im at with a 235ish rating or do a cummins conversion for 5k
it is the same thing as the guys with the new trucks pushing 1000+ HP, it is what you want so you make it that way. I enjoy the hell out of roasting my buddies 1994 powerstroke, pisses him off to no end being that i am not turbo'd. Which might change in the very near future! hope so anyway. If you go and buy a 99 stroke, enjoy the maintenance on that sucker. Your new injectors will be almost more than a turbo upgrade for our trucks. But hey its your decision.
