If you want fuel mileage there was a running 300-6 on Craigslist last week for $50, but I passed it up and so should you. IMO you only get to go around once and while i've seen lots of guys smile telling stories of going fast and getting into trouble, i've never seen the same joy in someone's face while they told me about their fuel mileage savings...

Oh I have, and what an evil little smile it was too - when gas here was $4.25 a gallon and I noted the discussion between the "Suburban" 454 driver and the Toyota Camry driver - who still had money to buy a few beers.
It's coming again!
But that's beside the point. Now that we've all decided you are going to put the FE in the truck, lets talk about what else you need to do!
If one wanted the power of the big block with the packaging of the small block and the economy of the OD trans, a 392 stroker kit in the 351W is a very viable option.
Selling the FE tri-power set up would about pay for the engine build, too.
With it being a 56 why no y block love? It would look 10 times cooler when you popped the hood and it would have a more unique sound. They even make adapters for aod's and t5's.
Update Iam going with the 390 with the tri-power. Found the motor sat. It comes out of a 1975 pickup, should have 4bolt mains. Jam going to stroke it with a 428 crank and rods for a total of 410ci. As someone her said "Go BIG". I pick the motor up this friday........I'm excited to say the least. Powder coat guy called today and said$ 300.00 for two layer powder coat, sounds like a deal. Were going with charcoal grey for the frame and engine block, have a few more modifications to make to the frame but should be ready to send out in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all the input guys it made the desicion easier. I will keep you posted on progress.

Congratulations on your decision. I don't know how you got the idea it would have 4 bolt mains, but if it is a 390 block from a pickup, it won't, guaranteed. The only 4 bolt main FE's were the hipo/racing 406/427 engines from the '60's.
yep there right about the mains , ain't gonna be 4 bolt . but them old fe's can take a lot of power and torque the way they are and live forever . if it's got a 4 bolt main block me and a few others wanna know where ya live and the alarm code on yer garage so we can personally " eyeball " it and come back home with that worthless old 406 or 427 block and save you some unneccessarry grief my friend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and yeah a y block is cool too . got one sitting still but man i thought the parts for my flatty could be high priced !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
