I own a 2006 F250-SD, Super Cab, 6.0L diesel P/U. Since I bought it new it has had a severe shimmy whenever I hit a bump at highway speeds. Sometimes this shimmy is quite severe so as to cause momentary loss of control. I have contacted several other F250 owners and they have the same problem. I read where Ford says there is no problem or it is due to lift kits. Mine as well as others have no lift kits, purely stock. I have also read the problem requires a steering damper. It has also reportedly been reported to the NHTSA. Does anyone have any input on this?
I had a buddy whose Dodge Cummins 2500 did this same thing, apparently his tie-rod ends were bad and for whatever reason when we would hit a large enough hole in the road we would experience this same thing.... it was like driving down a washboard or a very bumpy dirt road at about 70mph. I would start there personally, I have a 99 F250 Super Duty and haven't had any problems.
Use the "search" function. Go to advanced search, super duty and heavy duty and put in "death wobble" (make sure you add the " "). You will be reading all night into next year.
I followed up on the TSB for this problem and had my local Ford dealer perform the fix, changing the steering damper and bracket for the 2006 model to a 2008 model. The problem is cured and is absolutely steady when hitting bumps at any speed. Seems to me there should be some sort of compensation in order, recall or whatever as Ford is aware of the problem and has a fix.
As far as a recall, apply the formula: Take the number of vehicles in the field (A), times the probable rate of failure (B), times the average out-of-court settlement (C), equals (X). A x B x C = X. If 'X' is less than the cost of a recall, they don't do one.
