Hello-I am in the process of swapping out shocks on my 01 Ex. On the driver's side rear shock, the top mount is giving me fits. Ford in their infinite wisdom used fender clip style nuts. I have one that has rusted in two so that the top part(the nut side) just spins. The bolt is rusted into the nut side and I cannot see a way to get to the top side to hold the nut. I have thought of grinding it off, but being that close to the gas tank I decided not to. I don't hink drilling it out will work either because it will spin. Any thought on how to get it off now? Thanks-J
I've had good luck with a dremel using a carbide bit. The bit is expensive, but it will chew steel up. I know it sounds like using too small of a tool, but it's way faster than drilling in my experience. Can you get to the shaft end of what you are working with? If so a sawsall doesn't throw sparks, neither does an airsaw. If you can get to the shaft end you can also soak it with PBblaster or the like and use vice grips to hold the shaft end while turning on the nut.
This happened to me also on a weekend changing my shocks. I was pissed to find this knowing Ford was closed. I called fox and they sent me the bars, but I thought it would be better to make my own stronger. Call the company that you got the shocks from and see if they'll send you some if you can wait. Good luck.
Try to rotate the shock on the broken bolt side to gain access to the broken clip throught the hole. Perhaps you can hold the top portion of the clip with needle nose pliers that are bent at an angle. You could get two new clips at the dealer.
