Have an opportunity to buy an 01 Xcursion diesel for $7000 or best offer. The bad...183k, it's dirty inside, needs tires, alignment, has small coolant leak and there are no maintenance records. The good...engine has good compression, checked by my mechanic, everything works except power door locks and tranny was replaced 2 years ago. It seems to run strong, is quiet, feels tight. My mechanic says it's a steal but the lack of maintenance records scares me. Don't really need it but have wanted one for a long time. Your thoughts? Skip
i just got my '00 v10 with all records and in good shape, for $7,800
so with the diesel which would bring up the price, i'd look it over well and if you feel your doing well go for it. its a pretty damn good price for a 7.3. i've seen some pretty beat up trucks go for more.
start low though, offer like $5,500 and go from there.
Make sure that alignment problem isn't actually bad ball joints. If the ball joints are bad, as they will be at that mileage if not yet replaced, you are looking at about $400 more by the time you are done.
I think you are on the right track, just make sure the seller knows how much you will have to pay in repairs. They are probably selling because they don't want to pay for the repairs.
Thanks for the tip on the ball joints...my guy is pretty thorough so i think it's only the alignment. I'll give the inspection report to the seller...along with the estimate. The seller lost his job a few months ago so he needs cash...reason for selling. Skip
I would check underneath for major rust. I bought my 02 V10 XLT for $8K last year and I thought I made out like a bandit. I preferred a diesel, but this engine sounded sweet and the price was right.
I would jump on it if I were you. Those repairs are minor. Plus, it's got a new tranny so it rules out the mechanical diodes problem. The only reason why I may skip on it is if he has removed any emission controls. The stupid California Air Resources Board now wants smog checks for diesels and you can't register it in CA if it does not pass due to removal of these parts.
There aren't emissions related equipment in the typical sense, like EGR's or cats etc, on 7.3's Excursions like you find on 6.0 Excursions.
Now, that's not to say a previous owner might have removed the muffler, which is considered emissions equipment, but something like that is easily replaced, especially when you wanna go aftermarket, like an MBRP unit.
Other items may be missing that can affect the visual portion of the smog check, like a fuel bowl delete, a CCV mod, etc, but those are pretty easy to take care of. Plus they're mods done by a person who usually takes better care of their rig, compared to the OP's description, so I doubt it's something to worry about.
The cheapest diesel excursion in my area is $25k. The cheapest gassers are $10k. Even with $3000-4000 into it to make it perfect, seems like you still come out ahead.
Unless it was a work truck and you're willing to spend alittle to get it cleaned up, but the interior tells alot about the the maintenance of the truck. Just start low on the bidding.
You got it for $5700?? Holy crap that's a hell of a deal! Nice job!! I paid 10k for mine and just dumped $7500 into it...of course it was for go big and go fast goodies...LOL
