My '97 F250, 460 ocasionaly wont start. It seems to act up more when it is warm. If you leave it sit for a few hours it will fire right up.
When it is acting up it is not getting spark.
I took it to my mechanic, and actually got it to act up for him. It wouldn't start, he unpluged the spout connector and it fired right up. He then said it should either be the ignition control module or ecc that is causing the problem.
Needless to say they have both been replaced, and it still does it. Can anyone help me out before this truck drives me crazy?
When this first started happening I thought it was fuel related. I thought it was loosing pressure somewhere, eventhough I could hear the fuel pump run.
But since then I have determined that It was not getting spark. At the shop it acted up and the mechanic pulled the spout connector and it started right up.
Since then it has happend a few times. The first time I pulled the spout connector and drove with out it, it ran but lacked power becaus the timing was not advancing. The last two times I pulled the spout connector, started it and plugged the connector right back it.
It runs fine, always has, it just an ocasional starting problem.
So here are some of my thoughts..... the truck will start and run normally except ocasionaly when warm it will not start (no spark from coil). If you unplug the spout connector it will start, right after it starts you can plug the spout connector back in and it runs fine. This would lead one to believe that the problem would be the ignition control module or computer, both have been replaced and it still has the problem.
I'm thinking its not the coil, if the coil was bad it wouldn't start with the spout connector unpluged either.
I'm thinking it's not the pip because it uses the pip to fire the coil with the spout unplugged.
I know its not the module or ecc, they have been replaced.
I'm wondering if the ecc uses inputs form the ect or tps while in crank mode to adjust timing? Could it be one of these sensors causing problems?
There have been no trouble codes.
It's going back to my mechanic on Tuesday, he's going to swap out the new ecc and do some more testing.
This is a '97 F250hd 460 auto, it has eec iv and tfi ignition.
The last thing replaced on mine was the pip. I havent had the problem since, but it hasn't been warm out since either. It seemed to act up more when the air temp was over 80.
that kind of sounds like the issues my truck was having.....Intermittent no start or would die.....Only happened when it was like over 80.....I would leave work go through like for signal lights, then hop onto the freeway and it would die. It just crank/but no start, get the truck towed get it home start it up the next day and it ran good for like 5 mins and then shut down. Replace my distributor with a genuine ford unit runs great now.But that was my experience.
The PIP can stop the spark when hot and the spark will be OK when it cools back down.
But if you unplug the SPOUT and you have spark and put the SPOUT back in and no spark then it is not the PIP (distributor).
