I don't have a 4x4 but I always pack wheel bearings when I change out brakes.
My 2001 psd gets a bearing pack every 30,000 mi.
Brakes last a whole lot longer then thay use to, 60,000 mi and are still good. I think my owners manual say's 45,000 for the 2001 psd.

Thought It might help to add this. Had to press in new ball joints in 4x4. Since I had it all torn apart, took wash tub cleaned all parts including hub/spindle,bearings,race,etc. Took magnet when done and retrieved a quarter size ball of metal particuliey. Had I taken job to shop, am sure they would have pressed in new ball joints and slapped it all back together complete with grit dirt etc. So,,, If your going to pack them, tear it all apart, clean it install new seals, pack it full of quality grease, but don;t overpack, turn, spin, fill it some more, just be carefull not to overfill w/grease cause you might blow your new seals.
