overdrive blinking on and off

why would the overdrive flash on and off? Dummy light? How can I get an accurate reading on transmission fluid? Truck is (the dreaded) 01 F-250 4 wheel drive. I dont pull anything heavier than my 4-wheelers.
Thanks in advance!!! Ross

You need to pull the codes and see what they say. Could be something as easy as a speed sensor gone bad, or something worse.

No, it's not a phantom light, it normally means something. Like Mark said, you need to retrieve the codes to evaluate further.

Are you trying to determine fluid level or temp?

To check the trans fluid level, make sure the engine is good and warmed up and then park on level ground. With the engine running, trans in park and your parking brake set...pull the trans dipstick, wipe it clean and put it back in place, then pull out once more and read the level on the end.

I don't think the chain auto parts stores have the right kind of scanner to pull the codes for these trucks. You need someone with the AE or ScanGauge or something similar. If you post your location there may be someone near you who might be willing to pull your codes for you.

can`t tell if the fluid level is up to par or not, it reads the same running or off, was thinking about bringing it to pep boys and having them flush and fill it. Good? I live in Grainger county Tn. A little town called Blaine, anybody close willing to read codes? Cold one or three are on me

Welcome to FTE Ross. We have a few members in TN that will be happy to help you out. We hold a HUGE event in Newport TN at the KOA every summer. I will send JD and Cory a message to get them to chime in and see if they can help you out. Cory Ziggy actually lives in Blaine too. This may be your lucky day

Unhappy

I missed the event last time,. just got back from pep boys, they said they could`nt pull codes or that it wouldnt show up for a flashing overdrive light. Hate to think my trany is going out, had it rebuilt 120,000 miles ago and have not pulled anything heavier than a 4-wheeller, and for the past 2 years it is driving only on weekends.
About checking the fluid level it, I dont know how to explaine it but it seems like it is full but it`s not like checking the oil where you can see a definte line. Thanks Ross

i was told (not by a mechanic) that if the od light flashes and its not all the time that t could be a dummy light for trans temp may be high. dont know how much truth is in that but figured it might give a little direction to your prob. if you have a gauge it might put a little truth or bust what i have HERD? i deffinatly am interested to know what the outcome is so i can come back and put this to rest. hope this just simpily gives you some kind of direction

Hey Ross, I live over here in Powder Springs about 15 minutes from Cory's he is at work at the mines today and he has the AE pigtail. I got AE on my laptop but I need his pigtail and I believe he has it on his truck. I think he gets off at 7 tonight so maybe one of us could get over that way and get you taken care of this week.

I had the same problem with blinking light without codes then went to no forward driving but reverse worked perfect. Well had tranny rebuilt but it ended up being my PCM is bad and killed the tranny again. Your PCM may be bad or just need to be reflashed.
