Never did this mod but by the sounds of it, kinda hope the pump screen is crudded up, that might have saved your injectors. Glad you got to it when you did, the intank mods that is.

The fuel bowl will pressure up and satisfy the fuel demand on short runs but if the line or pump is restricted, you will notice it on longer, sustained runs like you described.

There is not an easy way to get to the inlet screen but you can try to clean it by pouring a small amount of fuel in it and shaking it out. After doing that a few time and when you do not see much crud coming out, spray the inlet down with brake clean and the try some more shaking with fuel.

You really can't do much by trying to blow air through the pump backwards and flushing seems to do as well.

I thought the idea was to also eliminate the pickup shoe?

Not sure on all kits. I just got the DI kit and all it does is eliminate the mixing chamber with the filters and put a pre-pump filter on the frame rail.

I chitcanned that stupid shoe screen when I did mine. I instead use a pre-pump filter now. It's a lot easier cleaning an external filter than it would be to drop the tank and clean that screen. In a perfect world that screen would never get clogged, but all it takse is a bad tank (water=microbes) and that damn thing will clog up. Don't ask me how I know.....

Yeah I thought about that. But didnt really think that hard til after the fact! I should have known though cause my tank had alot of crud in it that I had to dump out. Guess time will tell, I hope I dont have to drop the tank anytime soon.

Intank Filter

In both aircraft and boats (which I work on) the idea of an in tank filter is a no no.

It is too hard to clean them and if they plug up they can shut your engine down (diesel or gas) when you can least afford it. Big trouble.

External filter is the way to go and you can keep it maintained with regular servicing.
