I recently had both the rear hatch door and window cables break. Some cargo netting got jammed in the latch and when someone tried to open it, they forced it and broke both cable ends.
1997 model year may be different, but I was able to pull the inner panel off and then release the latch with some pliers from the inside.
The cable cost me $50 at the dealer and after about 30 minutes I was back on the road. (The window cable was a b*tch, however, since the cable is riveted inside the latch mechanism. I had to bend the latch side plate a little to sneak the new cable end into the slot.)
