Is the choke working? Have you tried rebuilding it?

On mine, the needle was stuck so no gas could fill the float bowl. Started fine if I poured gas in the carb like you did. It would start then would stop. If you open and close the throttle is gas going into the carb?

Good point ^

Once you get it running can you keep it running? Or does it burn through the fuel you poured in and then die.

Edelbrock carb is a modern copy of the old AFB / AVS Carter carb.

When you get it running and it ruins the rest of the day .... does that include any cooling off or long periods setting parked?

When running and you mash the gas does the motor pick up like it should or does it bog down?

If it's just hard to start after sitting over night, I'ld almost say the choke isn't working properly. Even in warm weather, a cold motor is "cold" when started after sitting all night, it needs some choke or a lot of fuel being pumped in via accelerator pump .... by pumping the gas.

Possible that the accelerator pump cup washer is also cracked and not delivering a full shot of gas when you pump the accelerator pedal?
