You know, I couldn't vote because ALL those rights are equally important. Would someone actually be willing to give up the right to due process just to keep their guns? And how do you have freedom of religion without freedom of speech?
When put in that context, it sure makes you realize how important EVERY freedom is.

You can not have either without the right to bear arms. Likewise, the government can force its way into your house and property uncontested and tell you how to act on your own property. Like the EPA.
Well thats a no brainer. Without our guns, we can't exercise our other rights. Not to say the Goverment is corrupt; we are the Goverment, but the thought of masses of people armed and ready to protect their political rights, is a strong integrity inducer, to them.

I voted also for the right to bear arms. Without it we wouldn't have the rest.
I sure hope I didn't disappoint any image anyone has of me, but I truely believe in my right to posess and carry firearms. I like my guns and like having the right to protect myself and my family.
Although I believe in all of the other options, especially the right to due process, I have been in the position where due process "is" to protect yourself. Where I live means that you're out of place if you actually do speak your mind. First and foremost, without the right to protect yourself, the other rights we have "do not exist". You can talk all you want, preach all you want, but for some of us, without the right to bear arms, talk means you lose all other rights immediately. Plus, when you're being mugged, talk and due process don't really mean much.

I've spent the past half an hour typing, trying to express my views on guns. Was REALLY careful how I worded it; just trying to present another person's point of view. I just deleted all of it. You know why? 'Cause I was actually AFRAID of how most of you would react. It was sane, logical, thoughtful. BUT- it would have been setting a match to gasoline. Because I realized there is just NO WAY anyone can have a true debate about guns. Nobody that owns a gun gives a rat's a** what I or anyone else thinks about the issue. And that's a shame, because that beligerent attitude just adds credence to the anti-gun lobby. I could go on, but I know what will happen. I'm not about to start an argument I can't possibly win. Now THAT'S intimidation.

Actually I'm intrigued to hear your side of the issue. I may not agree with it but if you put it forward in a logical manner it certainly would be received in a respectful manner.
As a gun owner it is important to know why the other side has a opposing position. If I'm wrong, I need to correct myself.
A debate can take place. There may be some shrill rhetoric but the overall tone can be civil if you set the tone. I would recommend that you start a new thread seperate from this one.

Hey 56 -
I have very definate convictions on my right to carry/own a gun because without that right who knows what would have happened to me on one night in question.
On the other hand, I like to hear the other side. Maybe there is a different or better way of having handled the situation. If so, I'd like to hear it. I'm open to suggestions. What I don't want is to hear that I should have let the guy beat the s.... out of me, steal my purse and remember what he looked like when I saw him in court. I realize that things could have gone real bad, but since they didn't, you'd have to come up with a real good argument as to why I shouldn't have a means of protecting myself.
Moving as an option - I've already done that and have since been assaulted since the new gun laws have come into effect and can't carry mine in my boot without the proper permit. Good thing is, I only ended up with a black eye and a stolen purse. This guy never got caught and I couldn't tell you what he looked like if he did. Gotta love progress.
I know that this opinion of mine is "totally" out of the perspective of most of my points of view and many of my belief's, but once you've been there, it's hard to change.
In no way would I attack your point of view. I also encourage others not to do so. What makes this country great is that we all have opinions and are allowed to freely express them without being attacked. Please tell me your points. Everything in this world is subject to change if the reasons are strong enough.
