It would be easier and cheaper to find a used axle already geared.

The gears may be cheaper, but when you reassemble it you will want to replace all the bearings etc, since it is opened up.

Putting in a used rear end you get what you get , if you put gears in it you will want to get a full bearing & seal kit , check the axles real good & replace if nessary , you can also upgade to a good LS , this should be done by a profesional , more money but when your done its like a new rear end ....Lew

I would start checking around local junk yards. See if you can find what you want. If not, its not entirly difficult to take a rear diff apart. the most difficult part is shiming it. I would have a pro do that part. I am thinking about changing out the gears in my truck but it will be really expensive to do both the front and the rear at the same time ($800ish). I was really wanting to do 4.56 but i don't think i will find that in a stock truck at a junk yard.

Changing the gears should run less than $500 including parts at most reputable shops, much easier than changing the whole axle If its a 4x4 you MUST do both sets at the same time or lose the use of four wheel drive til you do...
