Whatever you stained and sealed with, a good marine SPAR varnish is a great choice to finish the project. SPAR varnishes were developed for marine applications and the bed boards face similar conditions unless garaged. I used multiple coats (4) of a SPAR varnish on a pine screen door frame and it has stood up well to southern exposure for over five years.
first off dont use red oak its inferior to white oak and use the quarter sawn version a 2 part epoxy coating like west coast system is the best expensive but the best it is sed on cedar strip canoes and wood boats kayaks etc use jatoba as your floor boards if you want a red look just mho
As I posted earlier, I emailed Eastwood about using a 2k urethane clear over the wood and they said it would be better to use a Spar finish. I used to have a sail boat and used the West Epoxy system. It is great and one of my choices I'm considering, Thanks everyone for the input
Polyurethane finishes only yellow out in the absence of natural light, like under a carpet or a windowless room. Your bed should stay clear for years providing it doesnt spend its life under a cover.
