I'm trying to inspect the brakes on my 60 f250 4x4, & I just broke my biggest screwdriver trying to remove the bolts that hold the front drum on(3 of them, slotted & flush with the drum surface). With these 3 bolts off, the drum should just slide off the studs, right? Anyway, anyone have any tricks to break them loose? I already tried heating them up, with no success.
soak with pb blaster and get one of those screwdrivers that u hit with a hammer and causes twisting action. sorry don't know correct name and I have one!
The tool that merlynr is referring to is called an impact driver. They work pretty well. If that doesn't get it, then center punch the middle of the slot and drill them with a 5/16" bit. You don't need to drill all the way through the bolt. Just go in about 5/16" or so to drill through the head of the bolt. Once that's done, a couple whacks in the slot with a chisel will break the heads off. Once the drum is off, you should have enough left of the bolt to get ahold of. They don't put up much of a fight once the tapered head is gone.
IMPACT DRIVER!! I need more memory. Had to use it on my daughters rear brakes on 2001 zx2(escort) and couldn't believe it when I saw those screws holding the drum on.
Impact driver worked! Drum came right off after backing off the slack adjuster. Ordered new shoes & wheel cylinders from Napa this morning. Any helpful tips for installation?
