Hi everyone. I have a 76 F-100 2wd that I am restoring and would like to put power steering in it. Could anyone tell me if the steering gear for this is different in a 4x4? I have a line on some parts from a 77 f-150 4x4 and was wondering if the power steering would work for my 76 2wd.
4X4 and 2WD use different systems and won't interchange.
On the 2WD the steering box bolts inside the frame rail close to the firewall. On 4WD it bolts on the outside of the frame further towards the radiator core support.
BTW welcome to FTE. Post some pictures of your truck if you can. We all love "truck ****".
Guess I fit in here then cause I like "truck ****" too lol... I posted some pics in an album of my 76 project and will update as I make progress.
Thanks for the quick reply and the warm welcome Mike. So I should stick with looking for parts from a 73-79 2wd on the power steering? Any other years compatible?
Stick with 73-79. Try to find a donor with the same engine so you can grab the brackets and pulleys too. The pump and box, easy to come by, the brackets not as easy.
I did this on my 76 F100 I swapped everything from the steering wheel to the pitman arm. Hardest part seemed to be getting the air out of the pump and lines.
