Just use some black shelf liner, it's rubberized and cheap. I cut out a large piece to cover the burlwood on top of the center console. Looks nice (as in covering the burlwood) and I can put items there and there won't slide off.

They have some great tacky pads at wal-mart that fit just inside the cubby. Works great, and is really cheap.
