That picture was an 86 F series glow plug relay, passenger side behind the battery.
Battery terminal gets power from the battery.
Glow plug terminal is power out to the glow plugs.
Ground (small terminal) runs to the negative battery terminal.
Controller terminal gets 12 volts from the glow plug controller, mounted in the rear of the drivers side head when the glow plugs should turn on.
As for when it should turn on, any time the coolant temp is below 112 degrees.
Remember, diesel auto ignites at very close to 500 degrees.
So even at 100 degrees ambient air temp, you still have to increase the cylinder temp 400 degrees for the engine to fire.
And you only have one compression stroke to make that increase before more cool air is drawn into the cylinder.
Glow plugs save your starter, they are rather expensive as well.
If the glow plug system, battery system and fuel injection system is in good shape, the engine should fire and run before it makes a complete revolution.
Your problem may be finding where everything is on the Bluebird since it may not be in the same location as it is on the F series.
So essentially on that relay I have 12V in from the battery, 12v out from the battery to glow plugs, a ground and a purple 12v out to the controller??
Sorry for the lamens terms but I am learning slowly...
Actually, The Purple wire is IN from the controller ... It is the signal wire from the controller to turn on the Glow Plugs by supplying 12v+ to the Relay's coil, thus energizing the relay connecting the two large terminals together.
