well guys a few weeks ago i ask a question in reference to my front end squeeking banging and skipping and tonight us guys on the east coast in pennslyvania got hit pretty good with snow and just my luck the u-joints that you all said was probably my problem seems to have given out in all of 20" of the snow that we've gotten here however the shaft didnt drop so this brings me to a new question for you guys is it possible that the bolt that secures the shaft to the transfer case has backed out and thats why it hasnt dropped rather than the u-joints or maybe something else help me please
oh and by the way it appears as though if the hubs are locked and the truck is moving the shaft turns even when its not connected to the transfer case lol just kidding but the god awful noise it makes had me thinking it was still attached though
thanks for the advice guys
It could be that your joint is broke but still hanging on, if I were you I would get under there and look. Save it before one end doses drop and does some damage.
Are you sure that it is your shaft joints and not axle joints?
Eiether way, fix them before you mess up anything else.
I remember "back in the day" although Im not that old....
I was running a 77 f250 with a 6" lift, lost my front shaft at about 60mph. Really messed up the floor, and then catapulted about 30 feet in the air. I was kinda scarry!!
Needless to say it looked like a pretzel.
My friend lost the U-joint in his jeep wrangler at about 80 mph. Snaped the front axle, cut fuel lines, and broke the bell housing on the transmission.
well now I wouldnt want that to happen but anyway I climbed under there today its definately the rear u-joint on the front drive shaft and the shaft is hanging on the cross member section which thank god it did anyhow I picked up both u-joints and intend on fixing it as soon as my wife gets home from work to watch the baby thanks again guys its really appreciated to know that I can get some sound advice from people with the same equiptment and have had the same experiences
Just wanted to post a note saying that ive replaced both u-joints on the front shaft and strangly enough ive got no vibration no squeeking and no clanking anymore
thanks for the help guys
Good to hear, When I was running my older trucks, I would change the joints on the shafts once a year, just because, and the axle joints every other year.
I always figured, I would rather be safe then stranded.
