While towing the we experienced a check engine light and truck went into limp mode because it thought it was overheating. We shut it down and checked in a few minutes later, temp was normal and truck ran fine. Checked the coolant and it was okay. Took it to a shop where they read the code and said it was the engine temp sensor ($$$), had it replaced and tried again. Again it did the same thing. FYI, it does not do it when we are not towing, we tried towing without the electrical to see if that made a difference. It didn't, it still had the problem. Any ideas, suggestions, I plan on taking it to the shop again but would love any input from other owners who might have had this same issue. The truck only has 52K on it, and runs good. Thanks for any input.
At 52k I would change the Oxygen sensors very easy to do! Then see how it runs towing.
A bad Oxygen sensor will make the engine run, rich or lean, and pulling a load create more heat.

Thanks for the reply. We have found out what it is, the engine is not cooling evenly. It needs some updated parts to fix the problem. Unfortunately there has not been a recall for it as of yet, so it is not covered.
