Until I got rid of mine, I would have called it "reliable", and never felt like I was "wrenching on it 24/7." On the other hand, the last Bronco II came off the assembly in mid-late '90, so they are all at least 20 years old. Find one that has been well cared for, maybe avoid the automatic (the manual transmissions on these are generally considered more reliable).
What do you consider a "family vehicle?" What kind of family? One of the reasons I bought my Explorer was because the BII was a little small (only seats 4) and because the back seat didn't have any shoulder belts in it, so it wasn't officially considered suitable for use with a booster seat. Because booster seats are starting to be mandated by law for the 4-8 crowd, you might look into that need, if it applies to you.
I honestly could care less about 10mpg's with what I got now Because my truck is a beast and I have put a ton of work and hours into it, But engine is prematurely worn at 54k and has blowby issues
