As long as your total load (yourself, your sunglasses, spare oil and your passengers included) is less than GVWR minus the truck weight, you should be legal.
I had my 8' bed loaded just above the top of the bed with dirt and rocks. The truck moved it okay but did not stop or maneuver for a damn. Pretty sure I was considerably overloaded.
... Don't know about other states but around here if you are over weight and have an accident you are going to get the blame regardless of who is at fault.
I see you are in California (you do have my sympathy).
The legal definition of driving an overweight vehicle is simply to drive a vehicle on a “highway” if the vehicle's weight exceeds the limits set out in Vehicle Code 35551 VC and a related statute, Vehicle Code 35551.5 VC.3
VC 35551
The permitted weights range from a low of thirty-four thousand (34,000) pounds for vehicles with consecutive axles that are eight (8) or fewer feet apart, to a high of eighty thousand (80,000) pounds for vehicles with four (4) or more axles where the consecutive axles are fifty-seven (57) or more feet apart.6
I can see charges for reckless driving, for speed exceeding safe conditions, or something like that. But I can not find anything for exceeding the manufacturer limits on a pickup truck.
Being able to haul a heavy load is a good thing, as long as you can STOP IT. Don't know about other states but around here if you are over weight and have an accident you are going to get the blame regardless of who is at fault.
You got that right, where I live the favorite pastime for ricers is to roar (fart actually) past heavy trucks then cut in front of them coming into a red light.
Here are some pictures of a F350 dually with 43-1263HD springs from ATS. The truck originally came with V code springs. The steel flat bed weights in at 1,600 pounds. The front of the truck has X code springs
With the steel bed on the truck, the 43-1263HD springs added 2 1/4" of height and fixed the driver side lean of 1/2". I did move the over load spring from the stock spring to the new spring. Over all these have provided a MUCH better towing experience.
