Okay guys I'm going to be putting my dual disk south bend in this coming saturday and have a few questions
Do I need to buy any other parts ? Do I need a new clutch fork ?
How do I check trans fluid ? And how do I go about changing it ?
Right now its seems I have a lot of drive line play when I shift between 1st 2nd and 3 rd ? It seem like u joints but they all seem to be good to me ? No vibration or any thing like that so what should I look for or check while the trans is out ? It shifts fine no hard shifting or poping out of gear or anything like that ?
What trans fluid do you guys recommend I have about 20 quarts of royal purple mercon 3 I think if I remember right but I'm not sure what fluid these transmissions take I thought I read some where that they take regular auto trans fluid and not gear oil ?
In a 2000 model truck, yes, I'd upgrade the clutch fork. Also check your pilot bearing when you pull the tranny.
It takes ATF to change it. Drain it out by removing the bottom plug. Replace the bottom plug and then remove the plug on the side of the tranny. Pump new fluid in the side hole until it starts running out the fill hole and replace the plug. You're now done with the fluid swap. I like to change my fluid every 50k miles. Seems like it takes around 6 quarts or so, but I'd have to check to be sure.
How many miles are on the truck? I can tell you that within a couple of months of replacing my clutch (213,000 miles) the clutch hydraulics failed and the pedal stuck to the floor. If you're replacing the clutch and fork, new hydraulics might be a wise investment.
There's 115k on the truck where do I get a clutch fork from and what should I ask for ?
I checked all the hydraulics and dint find any leaks or any thing like that but what would it cost to change them out ? What does the pilot bearing look like ? This will be my first clutch change ?
Don't worry, he'll be along soon enough. Ed will sell you the upgraded clutch fork at a discount. Whoever you bought the Southbend from should have sold you the pilot bearing (bushing). Ed can probably take care of that for you too. He can also get you the pre-bled hydraulic kit for the clutch. He's on west coast time so you'll have to wait a bit for him to answer.
Okay guys the clutch is in wasn't to bad now I want to change the fluid but I'm not sure if the plugs are the ones that have the square imprint or not and I just want to be sure before I start pulling them out and not filling it up anuff the plug on the side doesn't seem far anuff up on the side of the trans to put anuff fuild in ?
Almost like a grinding noise slash rattling noise ? There's no vibration though so I don't think its hitting anything we checked clearances with every thing like five times to make sure every thing was perfect I've put almost 200 miles on it already and no problems the only smell we had was in the first 15min and it smelled like the brake cleaner was just burning off since then no funny smells no slipping a really nice firm pedal
