I now know how a piece of sheetrock feels. I was running a 1 inch drywall screw into two sheets of metal today. I thought my finger was out of the way, but it wasn't. It went right through the front middle and out the side next to the fingernail. I looked up at my helper to make sure he did not see what I did and then quickly reversed the impact gun and ran it back out.
I have been putting peroxide and neosporin on the little hole. I was just wondering how long does a tetanus shot last. I had my last one almost five years ago. It really does not hurt much. I didn't even yell. It sure does throb a lot though.
I'm not a medical professional, but I am a Mom. Take a look around the area you were in when it happened. Is it sterile? If not, why take the chance of getting a nasty infection? Who knows what creepy crawly germs were planted deep into your finger!
Get a tetanus booster ASAP. It is lethal and incurable if contracted. And it is a horrible way to die.
Otherwise, just watch the wound and surrounding area carefully for signs of infection. If the area becomes reddened (and especially if you see a red streak going up your finger) hustle yo' azz to the doc for antibiotics.
I scraped a knuckle-just a simple knuckle scrape that I didn't even remember doing- and it got infected because I kept working instead of cleaning it and bandaging it to keep it clean.
Once the infection took hold I was a half day away from being hospitalized because the antibiotics took so long to bring the infection under control. As it was they still sent me to a bone specialist to conduct tests to ensure the infection hadn't gotten into the bone.
From a scraped knuckle!
So, get that tetanus booster and maybe just let the doc take a look at it while you are there. It doesn't need stitched and by now it is probably fairly closed up. They may prescribe a preventative antibiotic regimen.
I stuck my dads truck in a cow pasture once. My friend and I were knee deep in the stuff. I lost my shoe in the muck and wound up getting a pea sized rock in my heel. The next day at work, I took my shoe off and had two red lines going up just past my ankle. I went to the doctor right away. They gave me a tetanus and told me to go home. I asked him about the infected wound and he would not touch it. My dad had to dig in to my heel to get the pebble out when I got home.
This little wound looks very minor. I will go tomorrow and see about a shot. I am keeping it washed with anti bacterial soap and rinsing with peroxide then following up with neosporin and a bandage.
I tell you... being stupid sure makes life interesting.
I've drilled my finger a couple of times, stapled one, and almost cut one off in a table saw, all before I was 21. I managed to avoid any more stupid injuries like that until recently (41 years later) when I almost cut off the tip of my thumb on a paper cutter blade.
A few weeks ago I was screwing self tapping screws into a steel door to fasten hinges.
Holding the screw with my left hand and working the drill with my right, the screw wobbled and fell sideways and the square drive bit , while spinning, jammed into the flesh of my left index finger tearing a chunk. DOH!, I said (among other things). Washed with soap and water, applied some neosporin and bandaged and went back to work on the job I was trying to finish up.
THE VERY NEXT SCREW, I did exactly the same thing to the same finger only this time the square bit came out the other side of the flesh. DOUBLE DOH!, I said (among other, more descriptive things than previously said).
Repeated the process and called the doc to check tetanus status. It was good (4 yrs ago) and they asked if I wanted to come in for a stitch or two. I declined and all was eventually fine other than having a pretty sore finger for the better part of 2 weeks.
BTW- to finish mounting all the hinges, I took the time to pre-drill a pilot hole and finished the job without further incident.

I did the same thing, same finger, with a phillips head driver on my drill. Put a pretty good hole in my finger at the knuckle. That thing took several weeks to heal even with me keeping a clean bandage and the neo on it.
That's what I love about this sight. It shows how much alike we all are.
The tetanus is supposed to be good for 10 years now. If you were to have tetanus, you would know with in a day ( i was told). Since you may be prone to this type of njury, Booster shots are most likely the best way to go..
Made me check my Tetanus & Diphtheria card.
It has been 9 1/2 years.
I'll ask my GP for a booster when I go in for my checkup.
First today, you are not the only one.
I have screwed, nailed and stapled various appendages to large objects more times than I can remember.
(but as has been said, you're in good company )
I pinched the **&%$^@!!!! out of my index finger, connecting the blower nozzle to an air hose on Saturday, and didn't have my glasses on.
What an idiot!!!!
That was NOTHING compared to some of these instances.
