however, they *can* require a particular filter or oil.
You are required to use an oil suitable for the vehicle, the manufacturer cannot dictate that you use a particular brand of oil, or filter for that matter. But I am assuming that you would at least use a quality filter.
The bottom line with the maintenance, and for that matter any modifications, is that it is incumbent on the manufacturer to prove what you did or did not do caused a failure.
When it comes to oil changes - it is nearly impossible to prove you did not maintain your vehicle properly.

If they do that, then they must supply it to you free of charge under MMWA. They can require that a specification be met, but not a specific oil or filter unless they supply it to you for free.
I spent a lot of time working on new cars. Saw quite a few that it was obvious that the engine was not maintained. Always the same answer form the factory reps - "fix it' we can't prove they did not maintain it.

As to the quote above, I have also seen vehicles that it was quite obvious that the engine had been run dry, but had a clean filter and clean oil in it - doesn't mater - fix it.
I got a coupon in the mail a couple weeks after I bought my truck for $50 off first service and a coupon for free DEF fill. It's all one big piece of cardboard.
I am not going to take advantage of the $50 because I just don't trust a dealer to do something as simple as change the oil. You can read on here and other forums where they "forgot" and put in too many quarts of oil or "forgot" and used 15W40 or "forgot" to even reset the oil change in the computer. The one and only time in the last 10 years I actually took a vehicle to a dealer they "forgot" to properly tighten the drain bolt.
So for what I think we can all agree is the most important maintenance item, I'm going to be in charge of that. And I'm pretty sure I can do it for cheaper than $100 that some folks have indicated the dealer is charging.
Check dieselfiltersonline.com for good prices on Motorcraft filters. If you order more than $250, shipping is free so I just kept adding oil filters and fuel filters and air filters till I hit the magic number. No tax either. And check Wallyworld for good prices on oil.
I am going to allow the dealer to fill up the DEF for free though but I'm going to wait till I hit the 200 mile warning.

Speaking of that online place, we got the tip on them from this forum a while back. Turns out that our local Ford dealer sells the Motorcraft filter for essentially the same as they do (slightly less, IIRC?), so we buy local.
