C6 issues

The C6 in my 79 Bronco seems to be heating up really fast, like within a half hour of driving I can feel the heat radiating through the floor. As it continues to heat up, the shifts get worse and worse, really sloppy and sometimes I even need to pull of the gas to help it shift. When it is cold, it works like a dream. I did a fluid and filter change about 3 months ago, and the fluid level is still good. I started having these issues about a week ago, but attributed it to the God awful heat, but it's still doing it and ambient temps are about 20* cooler. Thanks for any information in advance.

Does it take a while to shift into gear from park in the morning? Is it first gear, or just from second to third? 2nd-3rd is the intermediate band, and can actually be adjusted. It is on the drivers side of the tranny, by the linkage. It is an adjusting screw with a square head, with a locknut over it. Loosen the locknut, tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ftlbs, and then back the adjusting screw out 1 1/2 turns. Tighten the locknut making sure the adjusting screw stays put.

Also, you might check for a vacuum leak or the modulator valve. If you pull the vacuum hose off the modulator valve and there is tranny fluid in it, than it is bad. Whether or not it is causing your problems I'm not sure.

My tranny does about what yours does. Has morning sickness (takes a few seconds to get into gear in the mornings), due to tranny fluid leaking out of the converter. I also had to adjust my intermediate band and that helped with the shifting from 2nd-3rd.

^^^Thanks for the info. I don't have any issues with it taking a while to shift into drive. The only issue it has is it seems to actually get hot in a relatively short period of time...and when it does get hot, that's when the sluggish shifts start to occur. Thanks for the adjustment tip...and I'll give the modulator hose a look.

Do you have inside frame headers? The tranny heating could be a side effect of the headers being to close to the tranny...

Hmm, do you have a tranny cooler?

My tranny does the same, shifts better cold than when it gets warmed up. I have headers as well. It's not a stock tranny though, TCI built it about 10 years ago.

Do you have an aftermarket tranny cooler or the stock one thats in the bottom of the radiator? The cooler may be getting plugged if its in the radiator, they are not the greatest in the first place. I have a aftermarket tranny cooler that runs in series with the stock cooler in the radiator and does very well. Remember for every 10 deg. you drop the temp your tranny will last alot longer.

Thanks for the input man. Currently, I'm still using the stock cooler...and was gonna check to see if it was plugged up this weekend. I was also think I'd go ahead and purchase an after market cooler. But don't have a cool what to get or from who. Any chance you still have a part number for your cooler. And is there any chance you have any pics of how your coolers are routed and how the after market cooler is mounted? Thanks.

I'm not a real fan of autos most of the time but if I was running one in my truck I would have a large cooler on it thats for sure.
I've got an AOD with 4500 stall in my Mustang. Its got 2 huge coolers supplied by -6an braided line and it will still run a little warm when running the car hard on a hot day. I've got an electric temp gauge on it and actually ease up on it to let it cool down when I see the temp climbing, that stall makes a lot of heat though. Heat really kills the autos and most of them run hotter than ideal in stock form. In my opinion nearly all auto trans need an aftermarket cooler.

I used to rebuild auto transmissions for a living and I have built up 2 1979 F150s C6s for myself and installed coolers on both of them. The brand name is Long and the part number I have is K25SR, 22000 gvw cooler its the biggest one we had in the shop. If you have a tranny shop near by Im sure they will have what you need. I chose the larger cooler because of the guts I put into the tranny, most of which came out of a 4R100, so its one strong mother. I will help ya with any other questions. Sorry no pix.
