Does anyone know where I can get a view of the underneath driverside engine/suspension/tire area, 98 Ford Ranger XLT, V6 4.0? I would like to know the proper names of the parts up under there. I can see there is some damage but I do not know the correct name of all the parts. My Son brought his truck home for me to take a look at as he was in a bit of an accident, truck is still driveable, just some weird grinding and noises now, so I wanted to make sure I knew the correct nomenclature of the parts that are going to need to be replaced.
So my question is can I fix this or do I have to take it in, what should I be looking for in regards to the loose component, I am sure the bars or brackets I am missing I can install easily.
The parts that are missing are the sway bar links available from most any parts store. The other part is the outer cv joint also replaceable without to much trouble just buy the whole half shaft it's easier and just about as cheap as just the joint. You may actually have a bad outer wheel bearing. I haven't replaced one on a ranger so I can't say how hard it is. If it is a unit bearing it isn't to bad a job.
what is the easiest way to get the outter shaft out?
i have it almost all the way out but it looks like I need another two more inches to actually pull it all the way out. is there anything else I need to disconnect
Final Question,,,, As I was taking my hub off my 98 Ranger 4WD 4.0L, I noticed there was no retaining clip on my drive shaft that stickes into my wheek hub, is there not one required on this model? What keeps the outershaft locked into the wheel hub?
There is some sort stub shaft retainer that is to be removed with snap ring pliers. Then separate the steering knuckle from the upper ball joint. Compress the joint and swivel the steering knuckle out and remove from wheel hub. Sounds like if you can't find the retainer that may be all you need to replace to take the movement out of it.
OK so here is my 98 Ranger 4WD 4.0L, Right Front Wheel HUB. I got that stupid Pulse Vacuum Hub off which was a pain the @$$! To my surprise there was no retaining snap ring or washer that held my drive shaft into my hub. I called around to get a snap ring for my hub but nobody has any idea on a washer.
Does anyone know if there even is a retaining washer that would go on the shaft first then the snap ring? Or will the snap ring suffice in holding the shaft in the HUB? That is my hand holding the outershaft into the HUB as there is nothing else to hold it there, that doesnt seem right to me. I have never had a 4WD, I am use to the threaded spindle with a big ol nut on it.
Does anyone have a part number for this axle shaft retaining ring?????? Where can I get one????
