As much of a pain your carburetor seem to be, you really need to address your overheating problem first.
Keep in mind that your truck is now TWENTY SIX years old. As tough and reliable as these old Fords are, parts do wear out over time, as they do with any other vehicle that has been in service that long.
If it is overheating at idle, a bad fan clutch could very well be your problem. Mine lasted 23 years before I had to replace it, and it was acting the same way your was - running warmer than usual and then overheating at idle. If you are blowing off your top radiator hose because it is overheating, something is definitely wrong. You could wind up damaging your heads and/or block if you keep running it hot.
OK..Now that the carb. issue is solved..Lets tackle what I perceive to be a cooling problem. I ran fans on my 289 HIPO Cobra..and a Mach 1 radiator and shroud on the built 351..which was in a '66 pickup and never had a problem..and that was in Florida traffic.....What should the fan clutch do with the engine off ?....and what would you do next ??..j
Not sure if this applies to you, but I live at 7,000 feet elevation, and everyone here that I've talked to that tried Edelbrocks have fought them and in most cases went back to Fords or Holleys. They just don't seem to perform at high altitude.
